Google Photos offers lots of neat editing tricks for your photos and also includes a video editor – and it looks like this editor is getting some much-needed and really useful upgrades in the near future.
As Android Authority has discovered, hidden code in the latest Google Photos app for Android hints at a number of upgrades that will be particularly useful for people who aren't as familiar with the app's video editing features.
The biggest upgrade appears to be larger buttons with clear labels for the Mute, Enhance, and Stabilize functions. This makes it clearer what these buttons do – they are currently represented by smaller images without text.
You can access the Google Photos video editor by opening a video clip in the app and then tapping the Edit button. In addition to the optimizations mentioned, it is possible to trim videos and add a variety of filters and effects.
More features coming soon
This analysis of the Android app also gives us another look at the upcoming playback speed control feature, which has actually been spotted before: It's not live yet, but it will allow users to speed up or slow down videos.
It seems like a 4x speed increase or decrease is the limit of the feature and it will be possible to apply the change to the entire video or just a specific part of it.
There's no indication here as to when the upgrade to Google Photos might go live, but it looks like most of the necessary code is in place now, so it shouldn't be long before we see these changes on Android (and completely) may also see iOS).
So far, we haven't seen any signs of AI images generated by Google Gemini appearing in the Google Photos app. However, it looks like we'll soon get an easier way to hide pictures of people we don't want to see.
