The iPhone 17 Pro probably won't launch until September 2025, but since it's a high-profile phone, we're already hearing leaks and rumors about it – along with the rest of the iPhone 17 series.
The Pro will likely slot in just below the iPhone 17 Pro Max and just above the iPhone 17 and perhaps the rumored iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim.
And while we don't know much about it yet, early rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a new button, new cameras and a new chipset, making it a potentially big and exciting upgrade. Below is everything we've heard about the iPhone 17 Pro so far.
Let's get down to business
- What is that? The next smaller Pro iPhone
- When does it appear? Expected September 2025
- How much will it cost? Likely starting at $999 / £999 / AU$1,849
Expect it in September
- Landing expected in September 2025
- Will probably cost at least $999 / £999 / AU$1,849
We haven't heard many leaks about the iPhone 17 Pro release date yet, but based on Apple's usual patterns, we can say that it will likely be announced in the first or second week of September, and in fact the only leak we've heard suggests for a September launch for the iPhone 17 Pro.
More specifically, it is expected to be announced on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of the first or second week of September. Apple more often goes to the second week of September, leaving September 8th, September 9th or September 10th as the most likely announcement dates.
Pre-orders will then usually open on the Friday of the announcement week, i.e. September 12th, and the iPhone 17 Pro will most likely be delivered the following Friday, i.e. September 19th.
However, it is possible that the various phases of the launch will take place a week earlier or that Apple will break with its usual patterns.
There are no price leaks on the iPhone 17 Pro yet either, but the iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 / £999 / AU$1,849, so you can expect to pay at least that much for the next model.
Can you trust these rumors?
There are no release dates or price leaks so far, but based on form so far, we're almost certain the iPhone 17 Pro will be announced in September.
A new button and a new color
- Could include a new button
- Expect the same screen size but possibly technical upgrades
- Could have an aluminum frame
The biggest iPhone 17 Pro design leak we've heard so far is that the volume buttons and action button may all be replaced with a single new button that can handle all of these tasks. It's uncertain exactly how it would do all of these things, but it could well have a similar design to the camera control button, meaning it could register both presses and swipes at different strengths and respond differently to each.
It's worth noting that Apple has already made iPhone prototypes with unified volume buttons, including an iPhone 14 Pro prototype. The buttons here were solid-state, not mechanical, and it's not clear whether the iPhone 17 Pro's implementation would be mechanical or not, if that were to happen at all, but it could still look something like this.
The iPhone 17 Pro is also likely to come in at least one new color, with a leak suggesting Apple is considering using one of the three colors pictured below. From left to right these are Dark Green Titanium, Teal Titanium and Green Titanium, and the source says Teal Titanium is the most likely to be used.
We've also heard that the iPhone 17 Pro may use a “more complex” aluminum design instead of its predecessor's titanium.
Another leak has since shed more light on this aluminum design, saying that the iPhone 17 Pro will have an aluminum frame and that the top half of the back will also be made of aluminum, while the bottom half will still be made of glass, so wireless charging will work . The report adds that it will also have a larger rectangular camera bump than the iPhone 16 Pro.
A leaked image purportedly showing an iPhone 17 series frame is consistent with this leak and suggests a Pixel 9-like camera design. You can see this below.
However, we heard a contradiction to this elsewhere: Another source said that the iPhone 17 Pro will be made of titanium, not aluminum.
A minor design change we could see either way is the presence of curvier sides than the iPhone 16 Pro, although this has only been mentioned by one source so far.
As for the screen, the iPhone 17 Pro could have a 6.3-inch display like the iPhone 16 Pro, but it could be more anti-glare than the current display and also more scratch-resistant.
We've also heard that the iPhone 17 Pro's screen could use new technology that makes it more energy efficient, longer lasting, and overall more powerful.
Can you trust these rumors?
We expect the iPhone 17 Pro to have a 6.3-inch screen since Apple recently increased the display size with the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the other design and display leaks so far should be taken with a grain of salt as not many sources have commented.
Two improved cameras
- A 48MP telephoto upgrade is likely
- It could also have a new 24MP front camera
- The main sensor could be smaller
The iPhone 17 Pro's main camera upgrade could be a 48MP telephoto camera, up from 12MP on the iPhone 16 Pro. This 48-megapixel telephoto camera has been mentioned in several iPhone 17 Pro camera leaks, so this could very well happen. However, leaks suggest that it will still offer the same zoom level – namely 5x optical zoom.
The other significant camera upgrade we could see is a 24MP front camera, up from 12MP on the current model.
As for the main and ultra-wide camera, the leaks so far suggest that it will remain at 48MP like the current model. However, a source suggests that the main sensor on the iPhone 17 Pro could be strangely smaller, which could lead to a downgrade.
And while this is less likely, there are also rumors that the iPhone 17 Pro could have a mechanical aperture, meaning you could change the aperture and therefore the depth of field.
Can you trust these rumors?
So many sources have talked about a 48MP telephoto camera that this upgrade seems likely. However, we haven't heard as much about the other cameras, including the rumored 24-megapixel selfie snapper upgrade, so we're less sure of those specs. We wouldn't expect the phone to have a mechanical bezel either, as that seems rather niche given the amount of work involved.
The most powerful iPhone chipset yet
- A top-of-the-line A19 Pro chipset
- 8GB RAM again
We can be very confident that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a new chipset, which will most likely be called A19 Pro.
Not only is an A19 Pro chipset an obvious upgrade, but it has also been mentioned by multiple sources.
Additionally, there is a possibility that the iPhone 17 Pro could get 12GB of RAM, which would be an increase over the 8GB in the iPhone 16 Pro. However, most current leaks suggest that only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will receive this upgrade.
And as for the battery, Apple is reportedly considering using a thinner and lighter motherboard, which could free up additional space for a larger battery than the current model.
Can you trust these rumors?
One of the few things we're almost certain about is that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a new chipset, as it's a standard annual upgrade for Apple's phones. We're hoping there will be a RAM upgrade too, but so far it looks like it'll stay at 8GB.
