- LG's next generation of OLED panels could reach 3,700 nits
- Comes for G-series TVs, but not for LG's cheaper models
- Samsung is also working on brighter QD-OLED displays
As much as we love the best OLED TVs, there is one area that still has room for improvement: brightness. Even the Elite models are a bit dim compared to Mini-LED, and LG in particular has been working on this. The LG G4 was significantly brighter than the G3, which in turn was significantly brighter than its predecessor. And now it appears that LG OLED TVs will be even brighter in 2025.
According to a new report, LG is launching a new four-layer OLED TV panel this year that will be significantly brighter than the three-layer panel on its current flagship TVs.
What to expect from LG's latest OLEDs
According to display industry analyst Ross Young, as FlatpanelsHD reports, LG has developed a four-layer OLED TV panel with an additional light-emitting pixel layer; The panel technology is expected to launch this year “with a peak brightness of 3,700 nits.” That's exceptionally bright for an OLED display. However, keep in mind that LG Display (maker of the panels) claimed last year that its latest generation panel (like the one used in the LG G4) could reach 3,000 nits, and the TV was never even close to that limit (and it has it wasn't promised either).
LG has already introduced this new OLED technology: at the IMID conference in South Korea in August, the company showed off a small prototype and told reporters that the technology would not only increase brightness by 25%, but also have a longer lifespan and would provide better energy efficiency.
LG Display hasn't said when the panels will launch. But the 2025 LG G5 has already been leaked with a 165Hz screen and has been listed on the Hong Kong Electronics Certification System with reported energy values that suggest the new panel technology is inside: its consumption is listed at 132W for the 55th -inch model and 164W specified the 65-inch version, which is about 20% lower than the 161W and 209W of the corresponding G4 models.
That suggests the new panel is coming soon, although LG Display isn't among the companies making an appearance at CES 2025 – LG as a whole is, and we expect the company to announce its new TVs there .
But when this screen is announced, don't expect it in LG's cheaper 2025 panels: the C5's energy consumption listed in the database is little different than the C4, suggesting it's just a high-end display.
LG isn't the only big name working on better panels. Samsung does it too. The same industry analyst Ross Young says the 2025/26 QD-OLED panels will boost brightness even further to 3,600 nits or more, and possibly even 4,000 nits. The arms race for OLED TVs continues…
